What is Foundation Retreat?

Our Purpose

For over 20 years, Foundation Retreat has been connecting incoming students with people and resources to get plugged into the Christian community in Lubbock, TX. Our volunteer staff strives to bring honor and glory to our Father in everything we do before, during, and after camp. As a parachurch ministry, we bring people together who are passionately committed to the Gospel, but might not agree on every secondary doctrine. We get to show incoming freshmen and transfer students their first glimpse of the body of Christ in Lubbock, regardless of their denomination or doctrinal background. We provide a place for spiritual growth for campers to see God’s influence, and everything we do points solely back to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Vision Verse

"So we, though many, are one body of Christ, and individually members one of another."

Romans 12:5

MISSION STATEMENT

Foundation Retreat exists to glorify the Lord through serving and welcoming incoming freshmen and transfer students to Texas Tech University, South Plains College, Lubbock Christian and Wayland Baptist, by pointing them to Jesus Christ in everything we do, and introducing them to the Christian community in Lubbock, TX.

Our Vision

Starting college is a pivotal moment in one’s life, as students are moving away from home and reforming their identity into who they desire to be. Our heart is to step in during this pivotal moment of transition in order to accomplish two main purposes: make the Gospel known to those who have not trusted in Christ, and help those who have a relationship with Christ get plugged into gospel-centered community. In light of this, our top priority is to extend the invitation to come to Foundation Retreat to every single incoming student. We want every student to have the chance to hear the Gospel as they leave their social circles and reform their opinions of themselves, in hopes that they will make Jesus Christ the center of their identity.

In addition to making the Gospel known to non-believers, we aim to ensure that students who have grown up in church continue to make their faith their own and pursue the Lord in college, outside of their parent’s influence. In the US, 50-70% of students who attended church growing up stop attending church in college. The two main reasons students stop attending are 1) they didn’t know where to go and 2) they didn’t have anyone to go with. This is a fixable issue, and Foundation Retreat exists to solve that problem in the Lubbock area. Our goal is to come alongside these students as they enter into college, and give them places to go, and people to go with. Through our ministry fair, we welcome every student into the incredible Christian community in Lubbock by getting them involved in organizations and churches that best suit their walk with Christ.

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH

  • We believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God, written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the ultimate source of truth, wisdom, and revelation, and it is the final authority for faith and practice in our lives.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."
  • 2 Peter 1:21: "For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."
  • Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

  • We believe in the one true God who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three persons are distinct, yet co-equal and co-eternal, forming the Holy Trinity.
  • Matthew 28:19: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."
  • John 14:16-17: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth."

  • We believe in Jesus Christ as the only begotten Son of God, fully God and fully human, who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross to atone for our sins, and rose from the dead on the third day. Through His sacrifice, we have the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life.
  • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
  • 1 Timothy 2:5: "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
  • 1 Peter 2:24: "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed."

  • We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who dwells within believers, empowering them, guiding them into truth, and convicting the world of sin. The Holy Spirit is essential in the life of every believer, helping us grow in faith and conform to the image of Christ.
  • John 16:13: "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
  • Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
  • Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."

  • We believe that humanity was created in the image of God but fell into sin through disobedience. As a result, all people are in need of redemption and can only be reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Genesis 1:26-27: "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.'"
  • Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
  • Romans 5:12: "Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned."

  • We believe that salvation is a free gift from God, offered to all who repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus Christ. It is by grace through faith that we are justified, forgiven, and granted eternal life.
  • Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
  • Acts 4:12: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
  • Romans 10:9: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

  • We believe in water baptism as a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ. It symbolizes the believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, and is an act of obedience to the Lord's command.
  • Matthew 3:13-17: The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.
  • Acts 2:38: "And Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"
  • Romans 6:3-4: "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."

  • We believe in the universal Church, the body of Christ, consisting of all true believers in Jesus Christ. The Church's mission is to worship God, make disciples, and be a source of spiritual support and encouragement for its members.
  • Matthew 16:18: "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
  • Ephesians 4:11-12: "And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers
